Can I replace a garage door spring myself?

We would strongly recommend against it. A torsion spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury, and it needs the correct winding bars and the correct replacement rating. This is the repair where doing it yourself goes wrong most often.

Should I replace one spring or both?

Both, on a two-spring door. They are installed at the same time, cycle the same number of times and fatigue at the same rate. Replacing one means paying for a second call within a year.

My door reverses before it closes. What is wrong?

Usually the photo eyes are misaligned or something is blocking the beam, or the opener's close-force setting is off. Both are quick fixes and both are worth handling rather than ignoring, since that circuit is the safety system.
